Alcácer do Sal has the distinction of being one of the oldest cities in Europe. It is said to have been founded by the Carthaginians in 1000 B.C. An important administrative center during the Arab period, it became a stronghold of the Reconquista in the 13th century. In the sixteenth century, it experienced a new growth thanks to the export of salt. It supplied salt, fish and horses to the ships that left to trade with Cornwall. Palaces and several churches remain from this flourishing era. Today, the city invites you to stroll through its historic streets and stroll along the banks of the Sado.
