It is the capital of Baixo Alentejo. Founded 400 years before Christ by the Celts, then baptized Pax Julia by the Luso-Romans, conquered by the barbarian Alans, Suevians and Visigoths, Beja then knew the Islamic occupation and its poetic refinement... then saw the birth of Sister Mariana Alcoforado who wrote in the 17th century one of the most beautiful texts of the world literature, the Letters of the Portuguese Nun. Today, this prosperous and white city lives quietly in the shadow of the keep that dominates the heights of the Alentejo. Beja is one of the beautiful historical centers of the south of the country, but it is still not very popular with visitors
