It is probably the most charming city of the Algarve, moreover the favorite of the French established in Portugal. Tavira is crossed by the Rio Gilão, which is spanned by an old restored Roman bridge and protected by ramparts rebuilt under the reign of King Denis in the 13th century. The city had its moment of glory at the time of the great discoveries when it served as a base for expeditions to North Africa. Nicknamed the "City of a Thousand and One Churches", it beats all the records of the country with its 37 sublime churches. In front of the city lie the salt marshes that lead straight to the beach, on an island accessible all year round.
