This peaceful town is the place where Henry the Navigator, the figurehead of the great discoveries, is said to have died. Don't miss the baroque church with its interior walls covered with 18th century azulejos and its painted ceiling. The main square of the village was named Praça de Tanegashima after the eponymous Japanese island. This was the first stop of the explorer Fernão Mendes Pinto, the first European to set foot on Japanese soil. Vila do Bispo is also twinned with the village of Nishinoomote, which is located on this island. The speciality of the region is the barnacle, a curious crustacean very appreciated by the inhabitants.
