Fátima, the place of the apparitions in 1917, is one of the most important pilgrimage centers in Europe. The city welcomes more than 6 million visitors every year. But don't expect to find there masterpieces of religious architecture like you can see in Santiago de Compostela or Jerusalem... Fátima is strangely sanitized, nothing protrudes and everything is so perfect that you almost feel uncomfortable. Even the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary seems overrated because of its immaculate whiteness or its brand new walls... After having seen so many beautiful churches throughout the country, one is inevitably disappointed.
