Built in 1491, it was designed by Boytac, the architect of the Jerónimos monastery in Belém. It is also called the church of the monastery of Jesus, a convent for nuns of the order of Poor Clares built in 1490 outside the city walls. It is one of the first Manueline style buildings with the superb twisted marble columns of the Arrábida. The 18th century azulejos that decorate the walls of the nave illustrate scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary.

L'église était fermée pour travaux. Dommage car le beau portail laisse espérer un intérieur de la même qualité.
Pour se garer à Setubal, il vaut mieux éviter les parkings près du ferry car des arnaqueurs essaient de vous soutirer plus que le ticket normal ! Il vaut mieux aller vers le marché, derrière le palais de justice : là, on n'est pas embêté ! Et c'est gratuit le dimanche.
