The municipality of Sintra has a population of around 378,000. Situated 30 km from Lisbon, at the foot of the Serra de Sintra, the town remains the "Eden" of Byron's writings: rich, elegant, extravagant, surrounded by lush vegetation and princely residences. An entire landscape classified by Unesco as a World Heritage Site in 1995! Even Sintra's town hall, with its neo-Manueline tower and edifice, looks like something out of a fairy tale! An ancient little town nestled beneath the old Moorish citadel, Sintra attracted the first kings of Portugal, who sought its cool summer air, and then the entire court, which built its own pavilions here. To top it all off, Portugal's last prince consort had a palace built, like the palace of Ludwig II of Bavaria, but 20 years earlier (he was a cousin!), painted in bright Portuguese colors.. In the second half of the 20th century, Sintra became the town of choice for artists such as Viana da Motta, Alfredo Keil and Cristino da Silva. Today, Sintra is a collection of several districts, separated by forests and parks. It's a world apart, very touristy in summer, but so romantic that you'll forgive having to queue to get into the palaces. In summer, Sintra is home to a number of excellent festivals (such as the jazz festival) that attract a select audience.
