The name of this locality, located in a region called Saloia, has crossed borders because of its enormous national palace, a Franciscan monastery of Baroque and neoclassical architecture built at the request of Dom João V. It was built as a thank-you to the Franciscan friars following the birth of his first child, his daughter D. Maria Pia. It is one of the largest in the Iberian Peninsula, and easily rivals the Escurial Palace (Madrid). Nearby is the Tapada de Mafra, a forest once used as a hunting reserve, now open to the public. The tourist office is located in the palace (north tower).
