PADRÃO DOS DESCOBRIMENTOS
Petit Futé's opinion on PADRÃO DOS DESCOBRIMENTOS
Built in 1940, rebuilt after being shot down by a cyclone in 1941, it opened its doors to the public in 1960 for the 500th anniversary of the death of Henri the Navigator. Its 56 m high, surrounded on each side by Portuguese figures related to the great discoveries, sculpted by the artist Leopoldo de Almeida, stand like a prow on the Tagus with Henry the Navigator at its head. Among those who have made the country famous are: Vasco de Gama, Bartolomeu Dias, Pedro Àlvares Cabral, Fernão Mandes Pinto, Magellan, Luís Camões and Pero da Covilhã. It offers a beautiful view of Lisbon, Belém and the Tagus. Its ultra-modern design contrasts with the architecture of the monastery next door. It was from this very point that Vasco de Gama set off on 8 July 1497 to discover the Indies, on the initiative of Prince Henry. His name comes from the word padrões. A padrão (plural padrões) is a "stone pillar surmounted by a cross or the Portuguese coat of arms and bearing an inscription". It was used by Portuguese navigators during the great discoveries to mark the locations they discovered. The first to use them was Diogo Cão on the orders of John II in 1482 at the mouth of Zaire. Bartolomeu Dias and Vasco de Gama also made use of it. On the ground, you can also see (even if it is not obvious without recoiling) a compass rose with in its center a world map, where the dates and routes of the expeditions are engraved.

Owner's Message PADRÃO DOS DESCOBRIMENTOS
The Monument to the Discoveries (Padrão dos Descobrimentos) is one of the symbols of Lisbon and is located in one of the areas of the city particularly rich in historical and cultural heritage; the Belem district. The Monument to the Discoveries is attributed to the architect Cottinelli Telmo (1897-1948) and the sculptor Leopoldo de Almeida (1898-1975). It was erected for the first time in 1940, for an ephemeral period, on the occasion of the Portuguese World Exhibition. Its final construction dates from 1960, during the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the death of Henrique the Navigator.
