One of the most popular seaside resorts in the country, it lies at the foot of high dunes, along a beach of fine sand that never ends. A perfect place for long walks (and to taste a fresh herring in one of the fish kiosks!). Zandvoort (from sandevoerde or "young dune") came into being around 1100, as a result of a large sand movement to the west of the prelittoral ridge on which Haarlem is situated. A small number of fishermen settled on the barrier beach, where the row of dunes ends. It has many shops, a casino and even a car circuit that hosts the F1.
