Administrative capital of North Holland, it has about 160,000 inhabitants. Two words summarize the identity of this bourgeois city, a sort of chic suburb of Amsterdam: luxury and serenity. Haarlem owes its development to two prestigious and traditional activities: the cultivation of bulbous plants and the textile industry. It abounds in small hidden havens of peace, called the hofjes, these houses which surround an interior court flowered in summer and former places of charity. Haarlem is the capital of the tulip, whose spring flowering fields have stretched to the city's doorstep since the 17th century.
