This charming old town, 6 km from Rotterdam, once inhabited by fishermen, has long been known for its gin and shipyards. Proud of its rich past, Schiedam is home to national monuments built by prosperous burners and distillers. The municipality was founded around 1230, on the banks of the small river Schie, just behind a dam installed by Mr. Van Wassenaar. Schiedam owes its reputation to its brandy (jenever), but it reveals other riches. Water plays an important role. The city center has several canals, docks and inland ports. Schiedam attracts many boaters.
