Since the ^17th century, the Nieuwmarkt ("new market") square has been the city's most important market, where you can stock up every morning to avoid the supermarkets. In addition, from May to November, the area hosts a flea market where furniture and objects from all over the world abound. But the best part is on Saturdays, when local producers come to sell flowers and organic food. Don't miss the stroopwafel stands or the fresh fruit juices... A unique atmosphere.

In a modern and bright setting, Kuyt is an exceptional address with an exemplary reputation. This shop was elected pastry shop of the year in 2006 and its apple pie is regularly at the top of the local and national rankings. The hardest part will be to make a choice, as there are so many temptations, the macaroons and the cheesecakeare really unforgettable. Even worse, in addition to the demonic pastries, the address offers a chocolate to fall. It's impossible to resist the temptation. In summer, Kuyt titillates our taste buds even more with its homemade ice cream.

Our favorite ice cream parlour in the capital, located in the heart of the Jordaan district. On summer days, it's easy to follow the hordes of children (and parents) who are irresistibly drawn to this historic address, which has been in existence since the 1950s. The ice creams are, of course, homemade (around 20 different flavors), and kids love the Smurf ice cream (no doubt about the color, but the name is Smurf in Dutch), plus they can choose smaller cones and get chocolate vermicelli on top!

Another city classic, this address has long delighted generations of Amstellodammers with its excellent pastries! People flock to the tiny, charming store to order pastries, chocolates and cookies. The service is very professional. The sweet classic is the cheesecake topped with strawberry jam, and the classic, shall we say, savory legend is the shrimp croquette. We also love their delicious homemade ice creams. You can also buy their famous chocolates in the shape of Amsterdam houses.

An address not to be missed if you're in search of delicious sweets. Waldo has the means to make you succumb, offering a variety of brownies, blondies (white chocolate), cheesecakes and tarts, each more succulent than the last and presented in an original way. Innovative Waldo is always on the cutting edge and constantly researching. Note that the pastries are sold in small wooden containers to limit waste, and the receipt is sent by e-mail. An address that really has it all!

It's not the most attractive part of town, just across from the train station, with tacky signs somewhere between fake souvenirs and sexyland. Founded by two Dutch brothers, Marco and Issa (the latter of whom worked at the Gosselin patisserie in Paris), Issa offers top-quality French-style bread and pastries to take away or eat in. For several years now, Issa has pursued his career without his brother. The products are succulent and artisanal, and the interior, with its interesting Art Deco ceiling, is vast.

An address that the locals love to hate, so much so that its success has led to the neighborhood being overrun by tourists... Van Stapele specializes in a recipe mastered to perfection: the chocolate chip cookie. Manager Vera van Stapele has found the golden formula, and her concept has been a resounding success for several years. The cookies aren't cheap, but they're so good, we're tempted! Beware, the cookies are regularly sold out by 4pm, often earlier. There's always a little surprise for the kids.

This cheese brand, well-known in the Netherlands for many years, invites grand public with two brand new shops in Amsterdam. Of course, you can discover the famous Gouda Goûtu, as well as other original alternative, for instance cheese with pesto and basil or better yet, the spicy or tomato cheeses. The brand is also open for tasting courses that take place every day in the Damrak shop from 16 pm (lasts 60 minutes). For €15, you have the occasion to taste various cheeses accompanied by wines and fruits. For tasting courses or a souvenir of Holland, the address is truly nice.

The L'Amuse cheese shop is a real institution in the Netherlands, a benchmark for good living. It's probably the most gourmet cheese shop, and the biggest too... You'll find 400 cheese references from France, but also and above all from the other country of cheese, the Netherlands! L'Amuse matures its cheeses and is a veritable Ali Baba's cave for gourmets from all over the world. L'Amuse also offers exclusive oils and other products. These include fabulous, dangerous truffle chips.

Along Singel, between the Leidsestraat and the Vijzelstraat, the flower market offers all kinds of tulips, in the middle of a floral profusion, colourful and fragrant. In a lively pedestrian street where it is good lunch or coffee. This market is still disappointing, the accessories and gadgets that have taken over the flowers…

This bakery, with its modern design and clean lines, sells excellent bread in Amsterdam. In addition to Poilâne-style creations and baguettes with a distinctly French flavor, Vlaamsche Broodhuys sells sandwiches, fresh fruit juices, as well as artisanal cheeses, yogurts, tapenades, quiches and jams made from organic produce, to take away or enjoy on the premises. The pastries are also worth a visit! A great address with several branches in the city, worth discovering.

This large market square at the beginning of the Prinsengracht comes alive twice a week. Monday is flea market day, a snoopers' paradise! Saturday is the day of the Boerenmarkt, the superb farmers' market where small producers from the surrounding area come to sell their organic produce. Farmers, middle-class people in search of quality products, old and new hippies all come together. We particularly like the goat's cheese and mushroom stands.

On Nieuwmarkt, an Amsterdam institution. Since 1743, this family-run herbalist's shop has been selling herbs and spices of all origins. 600 different varieties, for apprentice cooks who like to spice up their dishes with unexpected flavors. A visit here is enough to make you feel like a character from the Golden Age, coming for his remedies and creams. The setting is magnificent, with a superb historic ambiance in a neighborhood that's just as historic. Ideal before plunging into the strange delights of the red light district just a few steps away...

An address we love for many reasons. The name announces the color of this beautiful patisserie in the heart of the 9 petites rues district. Two key words here: refinement and savoir-vivre (good living!). The people of Amstellodam make no mistake, and flock to this classic setting to buy their cakes. Don't miss their homemade caramels and macaroons, with a fondant reminiscent of those from our capital... Our preference is for the tart lemon tart, but we love their Easter creations!

This very pleasant market is a successful blend of Dutch traditions and North African and Turkish populations. The atmosphere is popular and authentic. Prices are reasonable, even if the market, like the rest of the neighborhood, is becoming slightly gentrified. A market we love and prefer to Albert Cuyp, which has become too well-known and commercial. Just a stone's throw from the center of town, De Hallen gets the neighborhood moving in spectacular fashion. If you come with the family, your children will be able to taste fruit, each more exotic than the last.

The nicest market in town, according to many. Many people from North Africa and the Middle East set up store in this market, which is open to all trades and is probably one of the cheapest in the city. Located in the eastern part of the city, in an area undergoing major renewal, you'll enjoy taking a stroll and then walking up the Javastraat and adjacent streets for a different way of discovering the city and its people. Did you know that Amsterdam is home to 180 different nationalities? You can feel it in the heart of this market.

Are you missing something when the grocery stores are all closed? Sterk is a benchmark nightshop in Amsterdam. It's the place to go for late-night booze. Sterk offers a good selection of salads and cheeses, but also a long list of wines and spirits, including an impressive selection of champagnes. It has been a veritable institution since 1962. There's another address at Clerqstraat 7, with a pretty red-and-white storefront that can be seen from a long way off.
