EYE - DUTCH FILM LIBRARY
Dutch film library symbol of a new era, carrying the idea of openness and total spectacle, open to the world
Eye, the Dutch Film Archive, is housed in a building that has become an instant classic over the past 10 years, symbolizing a new era for this once neglected waterfront. The building, a kind of immaculate white spaceship with multiple perspectives, was designed by Viennese architects Delugan-Meissl. With 4 cinemas, each with a unique theme and décor, an exhibition hall (4 exhibitions per year) of over 1,200 square metres, and a shop/bookshop, Eye is intended to be a new kind of cinémathèque, embodying the idea of openness and total spectacle, open to the world and transgenerational.
The underground spaces are freely accessible. You can let yourself be transported into pods, futuristic cabins where you can watch films, or experience a "mobile thrill" by loading a film onto your laptop. The interior is a sort of forum with steps leading down to the café-restaurant, while the exterior is a magnificent terrace which, weather permitting, offers an incredible view of Amsterdam. Eye boasts a rich collection of 46,000 films, 500,000 photos, 41,500 posters, scripts and archives. Eye regularly organizes thematic festivals and meetings, and is a new monumental landmark in the city. It's one of our favorite addresses. An address not to be missed, where you can even get married!
Architecture remarquable.
