The 16,800 hectare reserve stretches across a vast plain crossed by the Mzinene River, where there are no less than seven different ecosystems, including the national heritage sand forest. Today, Phinda is home not only to the Big Five, but also to numerous antelopes and the largest concentration of nyalas, not to mention tens of thousands of fish and birds. The reserve can be divided into two parts: the sand forest area, with little natural relief, plenty of vegetation and more herds in winter thanks to the artificial waterholes, and the bush area, which looks like dry bush.
