Port Saint Johns is the largest town in the area with some 10,000 inhabitants. It is located at the mouth of the Mzimvubu River, the "home of the hippos", which joins the sea between Mount Sullivan and Mount Thesiger. The city has three beaches: the first is close to the center, the second is to the south, more popular, in a bay protected from the sea by mountains, while the third is to the north past Ferry Point. More than ever, Port Saint Johns is a haven for eccentrics, hippies and young travelers. But the village itself is very African, very lively, with a permanent street market, fruits, vegetables, bric-a-brac, sangoma who spread their stalls in the street, revealing animal skins, potions and other magical secrets. This is where the only supermarket in the area is located, but it is not very well stocked. The place is known to be a high place of cannabis culture. The origin of the name of the town founded in 1878 is mysterious. The village keeps the traces of a colonial grandeur: its majestic luxurious buildings welcome tourists today. Hiking through the forest which has more than 250 species of birds, canoeing, golf, horseback riding... The road between Mthatha and Port Saint Johns is one of the most beautiful in the region. Port Saint Johns and its surroundings invite you to enjoy beautiful walks through the forest which counts no less than 250 species of birds, living and flying in the tops of the forest. What a country! What a postcard!
