In 1811, the British established a town in honour of King George III of England. At the beginning of the 20th century, the railway arrived from Cape Town; at the price of titanic works, it was possible to make the train climb the mountain so that it finally reached Oudtshoorn. Oudtshoorn, situated at 226 m above sea level, is a very large town. The drive through it seems endless. The town, which has an airport, is a communication hub for the Garden Route and the Little Karoo. If it has no major interest, a bit like its neighbour Mossel Bay, George can be a stopover for supplies on the Garden Route.
