She is an old lady in a white dress daydreaming by the Sundays River. The town was established by the Governor of the Cape, Jacob van De Graaff, in 1786. This was in response to a petition to create an administrative centre. Graaff-Reinet is the fourth oldest city in South Africa, after Cape Town, Stellenbosch and Swellendam. It has about two hundred historical monuments, which is much more than other cities in the country. You can spend a day in the historic centre. Today, at 759 m above sea level, the city is the meeting point of all Merino sheep and Angora goat breeders.
