There was in fact a before and after to the "trekkebokke". The terrible drought of 1849 had caused wild animals, the springboks, to flee; according to legend, the mad herd had gone into the Atlantic. This led to the intensive breeding of merino sheep. The town of Beaufort West, established in 1820, became an important railway centre on the Cape line and a popular wool market. Why Beaufort? Because the father of the then Cape Town Premier was the Duke of Beaufort. The town is very proud to have been the birthplace of Chris Barnard, the surgeon who performed the first heart transplant.
