Prince Albert is situated near the northern slopes of the Swartberg range which separates the Karoo from the Klein Karoo. The village, founded in 1842, was named after the prince, husband of Queen Victoria. It is a refuge of civilization between the Great and the Little Karoo, an oasis between two deserts. Go out into the street at night and look up to the sky: you can hear the stars. Plus, there's a winery, an olive oil producer and the chance to buy local mohair wool clothing. Prince Albert is fashionable. A small tribe of quality ex-citizens are making a very chic return to the land here. The proof: they rent scooters here.
