The town is named after a Dutch and Scottish Reformed minister. Based in Swellendam, he visited the home of Mr. Johan Van Zijl of the Roodezanndt farm every three months to conduct religious services for the families in the area. In 1852 he decided to create a town around the farm and so Robertson grew around the vineyards. We love the understated charm of Robertson, which is separated from the Karoo by a single pass. Nestled in the mountains in the heart of pretty vineyards, the stage is rural with many estates to visit and a pleasant and popular provincial town centre. A horse and an ostrich stand guard over the town's coat of arms.
