Constantia is a centre for the bourgeoisie and aristocracy. It was here that the first wineries in the Cape were built when the settlers arrived, notably Groot Constantia in 1685. The vineyards occupy a large part of the site, which includes other estates renowned for their Constantia wine, such as Constantia Uitsig, Klein Constantia and Steenberg. The atmosphere is rather stuffy, very "old empire", contrary to the rest of the city. These large estates have been fitted out with luxury hotels and gourmet restaurants. The Cavendish Square shopping centre, in the neighbouring district, is renowned for its luxury shops.
