At an altitude of 145 m and surrounded by high karst mountains, the Ba Bê lakes lie at the heart of a national park rich in natural species. These include many endangered animals, such as bears and black gibbons. The site is also renowned for its concentration of the greatest variety of rare orchids in Vietnam and even Southeast Asia. There are no fewer than 182 species. Lakes in the plural, because Ba Bê or Slam Pé (three lakes in dialect) is in fact made up of the Pé Lầm, Pé Lù and Pé Lèn lakes. The three lakes are interconnected and stretch for over 8 km. Their waters are rich in fish and home to many varieties of fish, including the ca chien, which can weigh over ten kilos. The site is superb and exudes peace. The beauty of the lakes and surroundings is complemented by a somewhat mysterious atmosphere created by the rugged karst landforms. The sumptuous landscapes of the Ba Bê lakes served as the backdrop for Olivier Lorelle's film Ciel rouge, released in cinemas in summer 2017, as well as G. Nicloux's film Les Confins du monde, released in May 2018.
