A former port town of the Chame kingdom, Quy Nhon was once called Sri Vini and acted as a commercial intermediary between the capital Vijaya (Binh Dinh, 25 km to the northwest) and China. A few Cham remains can be seen here. The town, long a sleepy place, has been enjoying a new lease of life in recent years. Its tourism potential, particularly on the waterfront, is beginning to be exploited. According to Vu Hoang Ha, Chairman of the Binh Dinh Provincial People's Committee, Quy Nhon is a fairy godmother. After years of claustration, she has emerged from her palace and the lively life has made her seductive. Quy Nhon is still untouched by mass tourism, making it a very pleasant seaside destination.
