50 km north of Pleiku, the town of Kontum (in the language of the Bahnar ethnic group, kon means "village" and tum "the water piece, the pond, the lake", hence Kontum, "the village surrounded by water pieces"). Around, the villages are populated by Bahnar, Sedang and Gia Rai minorities. This region is slowly opening to tourism. These ethnic groups, who have their own customs, laws and beliefs, have always vigorously opposed any power undertaking a policy of assimilation. Some areas are difficult to access. Kontum is renowned for its wooden cathedral, which combines Romanesque architecture with the traditional architecture of the Bahnar ethnic group.
