Houses on stilts, rice paddies, canals: the whole ensemble forms a splendid landscape. Rach Gia has a population of 250,000 and is characterized by its multicultural mix of Chinese, Kinh and Khmer. Its picturesque market is a great place to enjoy a drink. A must-see is the Phat Lon pagoda, hidden among palm trees and other gigantic trees, and founded in the 18thcentury by the Khmers. Some forty frescoes illustrate the story of Buddha. Also worth seeing is a temple dedicated to Nguyên Trung Truc, leader of the Vietnamese resistance against the French from the mid-19th century.
