Bordered by the South China Sea, Soc Trang is located at the mouth of the Mekong River. Its pagodas and the festivals of the Khmer community, which makes up about 30% of the 1.3 million inhabitants, are the main attractions of the city. The famous Ooc Om Bok Festival is held in the tenth month of the year and hosts dugout races. The bat pagoda (Mahatup) is over 400 years old. The site is known for housing a garden and an incredible colony of the animal for which it is named. The Khleang Pagoda, whose origin dates back to the 16th century, houses a document that tells the story of the pagoda's construction.
