In colonial times, Vung Tàu (formerly Cap Saint-Jacques) was a famous seaside resort 100 kilometers from Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville. Its splendid villas, however, were partly destroyed by successive wars. Today, only a few of them bear witness to the splendid period when Vung Tàu was a carefree resort comparable to the French Riviera. The manor house known as the White Villa (Bach Dinh), built between 1898 and 1916, is a fine example. Paul Doumer stayed here. Nowadays, following the discovery of offshore oil, Vung Tàu has become an oil research center and a town that has lost some of its charm. Its nightlife is plagued by prostitution and drugs. The beaches are nowhere near those dotted along the central coast of the country. Vung Tàu symbolizes the pitfalls threatening the development of Vietnamese tourism. If you still want to go there, buses and minibuses connect Vung Tàu to Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville, while boat travel is strongly discouraged due to frequent accidents (source: French diplomacy). For accommodation, hotels, though plentiful, are often full, especially at weekends and in summer. Eating out is easy: there are plenty of establishments to choose from, and it's also possible to eat in the hotels on the main beach (Bai Sau).
