With almost 250,000 inhabitants, this provincial capital is the most populous city in Galicia, after Vigo. Its location in the Rías Altas, a peninsula that juts out into the ocean as well as a vast bay, is eminently strategic; it is a commercial crossroads used by everyone and from time immemorial. Starting with the Phoenician, Carthaginian and Roman merchants, who called it Portus Magnum Artaborum. The Hercules lighthouse, erected by the latter at the end of the peninsula, is a witness to this period and is today the oldest lighthouse in the world, still in operation. The irruption of industry has not disfigured the appearance of the town, on the contrary: located on the peninsula, the old medieval quarter(ciudad vieja), very pleasant to walk around, is extended by an elegant maritime promenade, lined with glass facades of the nineteenth century, hence the proud nickname of "crystal city". An ambitious project launched about ten years ago has opened the city to the ocean, which surrounds it on almost all sides. As a result, a maritime boulevard now runs along the peninsula, allowing pleasant walks by car, but above all on foot, by bicycle or by tram A Coruña is a quiet and surprising city. Its inhabitants are said to be friendly, tolerant and liberal. Proof of its originality is the Plaza del Humor (Humor Square), which reminds us that lightness is a popular lifestyle in Corunna
