In the west of Álava lies a quiet, little-visited region, but one that is well worth visiting for its diversity of curious landscapes and unique sites. Leaving Vitoria on the N-1 towards Madrid, you can go to Trespuentes to visit the Oppidum de Iruña, a Roman excavation site, or the charming botanical garden created in the ruins of the Santa Catalina monastery. In Salinas de Añana, you will arrive in the Salt Valley, an abandoned salt mining complex that creates an amazing desert landscape, an interesting witness of the salt working in the last century. A salt fair is held here on the first Saturday of July
