It is attested that Sangüesa was the oldest Navarrese commandery of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. Documents show that the Hospitallers established themselves in the town in 1131, after receiving a palace and a church as a gift. Today, this pretty town of just under 5,000 inhabitants, grouped among the grain fields along the left bank of the Aragon River, seems to forever watch over the bridge that brought it prosperity in the Middle Ages. The jewel of this village remains the southern façade of the church of Santa Maria Real (at the end of the town). Also worth seeing are the palaces of Vallesantoro and of the Prince of Viana
