It is the gateway to the Way of St. James in Spain. Its Castilian name, Val-de-Carlos, comes from Charlemagne (who lost some feathers there in the battle of Roncesvalles, in 778). The Basque name comes from Luze Bidea, "long way", in reference to that of Santiago de Compostela. Three languages - Basque, Spanish, French - are spoken in this peaceful village... Peaceful, except for the Easter period! It is then the jerky rhythm of the ioldunaks, two big bells attached to the kidneys of the participants in the carnival that agitates the village. The monument in homage to the pilgrims is the work of the Basque sculptor, Jorge Oteiza.
