Tafalla, with a population of 11,000, has two interesting churches, including the Santa María church and its Italianate altarpiece carved by Juan de Anchieta. The old part of the town, in addition to its many façades with some thirty different coats of arms, also preserves some examples of civil architecture, such as the neoclassical palace of the Marquis de Feria or the 17th century palace of the Mencos. It is also said that the city was founded by the first inhabitant of the Iberian Peninsula, a certain Túbal, who gave his name to one of the best restaurants in the region. Since the fifteenth century, Tafalla has been the venue for one of the most popular fairs in the area since mid-February.
