This large town of over 17,000 inhabitants is the capital of Somontano and the commercial center of the region. But its historical importance is not the least: it was in Barbastro that the union between Aragon and Catalonia was proclaimed in 1137, sealed by the marriage between the daughter of Ramiro de Aragon and Ramon Berenguer IV, prince of Barcelona. Every year, the city hosts during the first week of August one of the most important wine events in Spain, the Festival del Vino Somontano. In summer, it is also an excellent base for excursions to the Sierra de Guara, its Romanesque churches and canyons.
