Located at the gateway to the Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park, the town of Thiers grew up on the west bank of the Durolle River. In the 14th century, cutlery, papermaking, tanning and playing card manufacturing were the mainstays of the town's revival. Today, the town is France's cutlery capital. Every year, Coutellia, Europe's largest festival dedicated to the art and tradition of cutlery, is held here. Highlights include the Musée de la Coutellerie, the Creux de l'enfer contemporary art center and the Saint-Genès church. In summer, the town comes alive with the Pamparina, a major free music festival.
