Argyroupolis, 27 km from Rethymnon, is an oasis of freshness: springs feed the lower part of the village and irrigate chestnut trees, plane trees, apricot trees and vineyards. Argyroupolis was built on the site of ancient Lappa which, according to legend, was founded by Agamemnon himself. Lappa was in open rebellion against Knossos, together with Lycos, in the 3rd century BC. The city flourished during the Roman period, as evidenced by the remains on the site of the ancient city. They are very poorly marked and require a map, which you can get at the Lappa Avocado store. Be sure to ask for details on the spot before embarking on the search for the ruins of Lappa, as a map is sometimes not enough. Once on the spot, you will be able to admire magnificent mosaics, superbly preserved. The city developed until the 9th century, when it was destroyed by the Saracens before rising from its ashes under the occupation of the Venetians who built villas and churches. During the Ottoman period that followed, the village was called Gaidouropoli and then Samaropoli. Its current name was given to it by the Cretan revolutionary committee in 1822 because there was, it seems, a silver mine (argyros) in the southeast of the village. The village is divided into two sectors: the lower part and the upper part where there is a square and the old town. A huge plane tree in the upper part of the village is said to be over 2,000 years old and provides generous shade under which benches have been installed. A few taverns and kafeneia in a lush vegetation: what better way to spend a few pleasant hours? To the northwest of the village, a spring emerges from a Roman tomb carved into the rock. In this cave there is a small chapel dedicated to St. John, better known as Agia Dynami (Holy Power).Unfortunately, the village has recently been included in the excursions of tour operators: in season, the tourist buses take away some of the serenity of the place, but this should not spoil the beautiful panorama that is offered to you.Two buses a day are scheduled, from Monday to Friday in season from Rethymno (35 minutes, about 2 €).
