Between Cézallier and Forez, Sauxillanges is anchored in a green environment. Strongly linked to the Mother Water, the river that runs through it, the town first developed around the Gallo-Roman villa of a chief named Celsus. The remains of the Cluny Abbey, which allowed the town to develop strongly in the 10th century, allow us to delve into the history of the town. The economy of Sauxillanges then turned to its watercourse on which we found until the end of the 18th century more than twenty mills. Today, Sauxillanges remains a town proud of its identity and has a gastronomy marked by its territory.
