The village of Agia Varvara is located on the road leading down to Gortyne and the Messara plain, 30 km from Heraklion. At the northern entrance of the village, near the Profitis Elias chapel, a rock symbolizes the geographical center of the island: you are here in the very heart of Crete, literally. Apart from its unique geographical location and a remarkable hotel that can be a good base camp for touring the island, it is unlikely that Agia Varvara will keep you away during your stay in Crete. The village may be a nice little stopover. From Agia Varvara, a road leads west to Zaros, 45 km from Heraklion via Gergeri.
