Outpost of the desert, with its 20,000 inhabitants, Kebili is the capital of the Nefzaoua region, characterized by the chotts, such as those of El Fedjdedj or El Jérid. These immense expanses of salt water, almost dry in summer, draw a landscape with a dominant white, that punctuate in places the green of an oasis and the beige of the sand and rocks. If you come from Tozeur, you will have traveled nearly 100 kilometers of beauty through the Chott El Jérid to reach Kébili. The Nefzaoua region is bounded by the Chott El Jérid to the west, the Grand Erg Oriental to the south and the Dahar plateau to the east Like all the cities of the region, Kebili owes its development to an oasis. It was once an important city for the slave trade from Sudan. This sinister activity ended in the nineteenth century, but there remains a relatively large black African population compared to other southern regions. The city, with its relatively rural atmosphere, is interesting by the juxtaposition of its various components: there, a small medina on the edge of the palm grove, here, a district evoking the colonial period, in the center, an avenue full of stores and cafes. Nevertheless, it is not really a place where it is necessary to stop, it is above all the governorate of this region and the transit obliged of the hirings or excursions for Douz. A stop at the Regional Commissariat of Tourism (Naloute street) will allow you to obtain information on the latest providers and tourist activities of the region, and in particular of the region of Douz, which depends administratively on Kebili. The 30 kilometers of road that will lead you to Douz leave no doubt: the Eastern Sahara clearly announces itself with its vast expanses and its infinite horizons. On this road of sand and date palms, the last tufts of scrubland still emerge, but the sea of sand is close, noticeable in the air and the light. From Jemna, which seems to be the real Tunisian date capital (quantities are measured in tons at harvest time), the doors of the desert really start to open. The modified landscape announces the approach of the Grand Erg, which points its first dunes in Douz. From the top of these waves of sand, we rub our eyes in front of a golden ocean punctuated in the distance by the pinkish spot of the djebel Tebaga
