ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

Located in the fortress of the medina, this archaeological museum is the most important museum in Tunisia after the Bardo in Tunis. The underground rooms reach 2 000^m2 with a particularly successful staging. Recently reopened after an ambitious restoration, the archaeological museum of Sousse exhibits, under the large courtyard of the Kasbah, important collections of mosaics including one of the most famous, The Triumph of Bacchus, dated from the third century or a head of Medusa, a piece of the second century representing this mythological being with a decoration of radiating scales recalling the hypnotic power of Medusa. In addition to the mosaics, the archaeological museum of Sousse also houses pieces of daily life covering the period from the second century to the fourth century. The Libyan-Punic room hosts an important collection of steles and urns as well as furniture of tombs. The Roman room houses a collection of pagan funerary stelae. The Christian room presents finally mosaics of steles, funerary reliefs, they are the most important of the ancient world after those of Rome. An important part of the exhibits comes from the excavations of the catacombs located in the west of the city. Outside the museum, the medieval fortress offers visitors spaces for walking and panoramic views of the old medina.
