After Enfidha, leave the road to Sousse and turn left to reach, after 8 kilometers, this historical village where the panorama on the sea deserves more than a few pictures. In the Antiquity, the one which was called Horrea Caelia marked the limit between the Zeugitane and the Byzacene (Carthage and Hadrumète). Its oldest buildings date from the Middle Ages, the Arabs having destroyed the whole of the ancient city in the 8th century. The narrow streets of Hergla and its white houses make all the charm of this small peaceful and perfectly exotic fishermen's village, where it is pleasant to stroll. You can see the mosque of Sidi Bou Mendil, the local patron saint who, according to legend, returned from Mecca standing with both feet on his flying handkerchief. The marine cemetery, plunging on the port, offers a superb view. In the village, there are also some rare remains of the Roman city (Horrea Coelia). Roberto Rossellini shot his Life of Jesus here, later imitated by Zeffirelli. Every summer, for years, the city has hosted the Hergla Film Festival with screenings, concerts, workshops, debates and exhibitions. Internationally renowned artists have participated. A detail appreciated especially in summer: Hergla is endowed with a microclimate, with a mild temperature, from 5° to 7°C lower than the neighboring cities!
