CHURCH OF PAKS (SZENTLÉLEK TEMPLOM)
Magnificent church in Paks, designed by Imre Makovecz, the famous architect of the Hungarian pavilion at the 1992 Seville Exhibition.
This church, built between 1987 and 1990, is one of the major works by Imre Makovecz, a leading exponent of Hungarian organic architecture. Its Greek cross plan is topped by a dome reminiscent of a tribal tent or protective nest. The carved wooden framework is reminiscent of folk craftsmanship, while the symbolic elements (doves, arrows, plant motifs) echo Hungarian mythology and spirituality. A remarkable building.
