About fifteen kilometers south of Huacas, Tamarindo is a long beach of almost white sand inside the protected area of Las Baulas. This essential seaside resort of Guanacaste owes its name to the tamarind trees which border it. Famous for surfing and windsurfing, it is protected enough to be appreciated by the less adventurous swimmers, but it is better to get information before diving, as some areas are subject to treacherous currents. On both sides of Tamarindo, the waves are even better for surfing, especially around the mouths of the rivers, but you will have to carry your board for a few kilometers along the beach before finding the right place. As far as infrastructure is concerned, Tamarindo is certainly the most developed place in Costa Rica. In a few years, the village has become a small seaside town very animated and, especially, very commercial. It is consequently very Americanized and very frequented by American tourists; the locals even nickname it Tamagringo. Indeed, today you can find everything there, even luxury stores! Despite the crisis that affects tourism, construction continues but fortunately the beach remains preserved, to the delight of all. Tamarindo offers a wide range of activities that will please all types of travelers, to relax or enjoy its natural beauties.
