Homeland of the Chorotegas Indians, this small town in the center of the peninsula owes its name to one of the caciques met by the Spaniards when they arrived in the region in 1523. It was indeed the first colonial city of Costa Rica, of which it keeps some features that we notice. A pleasant city that is today the main city of the eponymous peninsula, and its cultural center! Nicoya is the main access point to the Barra Honda National Park. Its white San Blas church, built in 1644, is one of the oldest in the country - and one of the prettiest. It houses old religious objects, gathered in a small museum
