Homeland of the Chorotegas Indians, this small town in the centre of the peninsula owes its name to one of the caciques encountered by the Spaniards when they arrived in the region in 1523. Nicoya is the main access point to Barra Honda National Park. Its white church San Blas, built in 1644, is one of the oldest in Costa Rica - and one of the prettiest.
