At the bottom of the Gulf of Nicoya, the island of Chira (an ancient hill surrounded by the waters when they invaded the gulf) is the second largest island of Costa Rica. It is said to be named after the first woman who lived here, a princess given as a gift to the god Jaguar. The 3,000 people, mostly fishermen and farmers, who live permanently on this 27 km² piece of land, almost half of which is made up of mangroves, lack a means of subsistence and are looking for other outlets. Tourism is developing there, notably thanks to its rich biodiversity which allows for beautiful activities such as discovering the mangroves by pirogue
