Around 1830, Cahuita was just a base camp on the way to Panama, a little further south than the present site. Later, the settlement expanded when a handful of Jamaicans came to settle on the coast. Gradually, these first inhabitants migrated northward to what is now Cahuita, which has become a lively tourist center in the last ten years. Its main street is a succession of hotels and restaurants. Fortunately, Cahuita regains the appearance of a seaside village as soon as you move away from it, with paths that lead to the beaches and lodges around, as well as the park, the main attraction. Unique in the country, Cahuita National Park is exemplary in its sustainable management, shared between the local community and the government. An exceptional environment, between its idyllic beaches, its forests sheltering a fauna that we like to observe (monkeys, sloths, raccoons...) and its crystalline waters which shelter the best preserved coral reef of the Caribbean, where we can meet sharks, turtles and rays. In the city, you can also enjoy a unique and exotic atmosphere when you go there out of season, when the beaches are deserted and local life takes over, between rastas, fishermen (often the same ones) and expatriates firmly established. A place not to be missed under any circumstances, especially for its special Afro-Caribbean atmosphere and its idyllic beaches! A trip within a trip.
