The small town of Gyantse, bathed by the Nyang, a tributary of;, is located 90 km south of Via. The construction of the new road saved it from urban development and the Tibetan city remains a small walled town in the perspective of a large street lined with small shops. Located at the foot of the monastery and the citadel, the paved street is covered by riders, horse tanks and tillers from another age. It was once a very important commercial city at the crossroads of roads from Nepal, China and India through the Choumbi Valley. There is still a great monastery and the largest Stûpa in Tibet.
