When Macao was the centre of trade between China and the West, Coloane Island, for its part, was the base of pirates soon commercial ships. Granted by China in 1887, Coloane remained almost inaccessible, on the margin of progress. In the 1960 s, it was necessary for an hour of boat to travel to the island. The Taipa bridge built in 1973 finished opening the island. Much more «green» than the rest of Macau, Coloane serves as a campaign, with its valleys and hills, its traditional villages and beaches. The Macanais enjoy their favourite sports (golf, Olympic swimming pool, tennis, kayaking, windsurfing, kart…), relax and stroll away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In the small village, some charming restaurants congregate around the church square, alongside the yellow and white chapel of Saint-François-Xavier, built in 1928. As in torpor, haunted by the shadows of the last settlers, the village is one of the most pleasant places in Macau. It is very pleasant to have a drink or lunch in the shade of its arcades. Completely renovated in 1996, its beautiful square is inspired by the square Largo do Senado in Macau. Today the real estate frenzy is such that the island of Taipa is closer to Coloane. The yards do not hesitate to spread over the sea and the two islands are closer to the point that soon it will only make one.
