As the crow flies, the streetcar stop to go up to the peak is behind and to the left of St John's church. However, it is not very easy to locate. From the Central subway station, you have to go to Hong Kong Park, cross Cheung Kong Park and go up on the left where it is indicated. The Peak Tram climbs Victoria Peak (554 m), a spectacular site not to be missed. The ascent of the Victoria Peak allows indeed to benefit from an exceptional panorama. Before the Peak Tram was built in 1888, coolies used to carry the settlers on their backs to live above the malaria zone. One reached it by sedan chair or on foot by a very steep path. Under the British colonial empire, the Peak was reserved for English residents only. The Chinese had to obtain a special permit to have the right to access it, the English nurses were also obliged to show a pass signed by the British governor. There is even a rumor that a Japanese billionaire lost his entire fortune after moving into one of the Peak's residences. This one would have been victim of a bad feng shui, and of negative energies... The mountain was reserved for the elite of the colony. As a symbol of social ascension, people first lived in the Mid-levels neighborhood, then at the Peak, and finally in Repulse Bay. Nowadays, the Peak is the second highest rented area after Repulse Bay in Hong Kong. The very wealthy Chinese prefer to live in Repulse Bay. Indeed, the mountain top does not protect them, as the feng shui is bad. In addition, living at the top of the Peak, one is immersed in the fog for much of the year. The view from the top is striking, especially at night, when Hong Kong is dressed in a thousand lights. Facing the island of Hong Kong appear Kowloon and the New Territories. The panorama opens on Central, the harbor, Kowloon, then, when you walk along the path around the Peak, you can see Lamma Island and the chimneys of its power plant. The many cruise ships anchored in the "fragrant bay" contribute to this urban enchantment. Near the terminus of the funicular, the Peak Tower offers a massive and not very successful architecture compared to the Shanghai opera of which it would be inspired. The restaurant, Café Deco, offers a view over Hong Kong, while not far from there, the Peak Lookout is installed in an old cottage at the foot of the new tower(see "Restaurants" section). Crossing the platform, the view towards the south of Hong Kong Island overlooks lush countryside, beaches and bays..

Modernized in 2022, the Peak streetcar can now accommodate more passengers and, with larger windows, offers a better view of the panorama. The different stations have also all been redesigned and you can discover the biodiversity of the Victoria Peak in an immersive experience by Go Wild at the Peak.

If you have enough time, several circular hiking trails around the Peak have been developed as well as access to the Hong Kong Island hiking trail. You can walk back down to Central via Old Peak Road (next to the deck and telescope), or to Pok Fu Lam. The Peak is also the starting point of the Hong Kong Trail, which passes through the four parks on Hong Kong Island and ends at Shek O Beach.

A faire

Vue extraordinaire
A faire absolument!
